Touraine Lynch and Maimah Karmo founder of "Tiger Lily Foundation" discuss the unique insight into young adults diagnosed with cancer and there personal lives during and after treatment.
When two cancer survivors meet to discuss life before, during and after cancer it couldn't have been a better match. As you know Touraine Lynch was diagnosed in 2001 and Maimah Karmo was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in February 28, 2006. It was a friendship that would blossom into something bitter sweet. Touraine & Maimah were both cancer free when they first met. I recall when I received the pain staking, bitter telephone call from Maimah Karmo exclaiming that she had "Breast Cancer". Going through this life altering event I was able to discuss with her the emotional side effects of cancer and it's treatments. Together we discussed how we could help influence, motivate, inspire, and encourage those diagnosed with "CANCER"!
Through our experience Maimah and I have noticed a trend in cancer patients and it seems that there are a lot of young adults between the ages of 21 and 35 hit with cancer. Yonder years it was most heard of our Grandparents or just older middle aged people diagnosed with cancer. With so many young adults hit with cancer we felt that we were perfect role models to give them that extra push.
Our discussion covered dealing with everyday life as a cancer patient. As a young adult we are so into ourselves, how we look, dress, and how others perceive us. As a cancer patient we want to continue to feel accepted and not looked down upon as helpless. We need to be encouraged on our down days when we feel alone, most of all we want to be loved. Even once the we've won the battle it's the emotional strain that we are still hacking away at, we still worry about the post check-up, scan, etc....
As a cancer patient our fight is never forgotten and we are reminded every day of what we went through. It is a part of us, it has made us stronger, and we realize how important life really is. There is a song that I love dearly "Just Dance" so the next time you think of Touraine and Maimah "Just Dance".
